Why Black History Month is important in workplaces

At Flagship, we have a culture where people are treated fairly, with dignity and respect. Where, staff and customers are able to thrive, regardless of their race. And we know that diversity makes us stronger.

This October, we’ve celebrated Black History Month and people from across the Group have discussed, explored and improved their knowledge of black history and its importance in our world.

Marcel Grant, Employment Support Officer at Flagship said: “Black History Month is important because it's an opportunity to really recognise the achievements of the black community and a chance to appreciate their central role in British culture and history.

Black history is still, sadly, put on the back burner, and it's more important than ever that we acknowledge the positive contributions that black people have made.”

Tanaya Burnett, Housing Officer at Flagship said: “Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to explore, discover and celebrate black history, heritage and culture, both past and present.

Hopefully the events of 2020 will be the catalyst for Black History to be shared much more widely, not just in schools but in museums, galleries and our communities.”

Over the past few years, Flagship has focused heavily on equality, diversity and inclusion. Nadine Tapp, Head of Learning & Development and Inclusion Champion at Flagship Group said: “We do everything we can to make sure we’re inclusive; offering learning opportunities, unconscious bias training and having an online community to connect and educate staff on various topics.

Creating an inclusive working environment, that celebrates diversity and where everyone feels they belong, enables staff to do great things.”

Tanaya added: “In terms of inclusion at Flagship, we still have a way to go but I think it's great that we have Inclusion Champions that meet regularly to share ways to promote inclusion at every opportunity. Working for an organisation that is open to having these discussions is important to me.”

Marcel and Tanaya will host a Black History Month ‘Lunch and Learn’ to staff, where they will share inspiring stories to celebrate black history.
