This summer, 22 students from West Suffolk College have been given the opportunity to join Flagship Services (previously RFT Services) for two-weeks work experience, gaining real-life industry exposure and support towards a paid apprenticeship.

In July 2020, Flagship Services sponsored the college’s multi-trade programme, where students had the opportunity to learn plumbing, electrical and carpentry skills. This pre-apprenticeship programme supports Flagship’s mission to help build the workforce of the future and ensure there is a strong pipeline of talent for the social housing and construction industry.

Warren Gannaway, Managing Director of Flagship Services said: “This partnership is a fantastic demonstration of the opportunities that can become available when industry and education work together. As a future-thinking company, we’re always looking at ways to build up talent and inspire those looking for a career.”

“We’ve been humbled by the attitude, dedication and ability of the students who have taken part. We will guarantee all of these students an interview for a full-time, paid apprenticeship with Flagship Services – really giving them the chance to develop and grow their skills.”

Staff at Flagship Services volunteered their time to mentor the students aged between 16-24 years old, passing on their knowledge, skills and expertise in the trade industry.

Oren, who has just completed his summer work experience said: “I’ve really enjoyed myself and have learnt so much over the last two weeks. Rodger, who I have been working with, has really helped me to pick things up quickly - I’m very grateful.”

“I’ve wanted to find an apprenticeship for some time; however, it’s been challenging with the pandemic. I decided to go back to college and learn plumbing. I’ve had the opportunity to learn important skills with Flagship Services - face-to-face, which something I thought wasn’t going to be possible given the situation.”

“I’ve been looking for something long term and am committed to putting in the work that’s needed, and this opportunity has really given me a chance to get into the working world. Whatever happens, I’m positive that the support of Flagship Services, and the last two weeks will help kick start my career.”

Flagship Group is recognised nationally for its commitment to employing apprentices and helping them progress onto employment. The Group has recently been placed in the ‘Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer’ in England and has been awarded the East of England’s ‘Large Employer of the Year’.
