55-home development approved for Ormesby St Margaret

A development of 55 homes, including 24 for affordable rent, has been approved. Great Yarmouth Borough Council has given the green light for the homes to be built on a 3.75ha site off Barton Way in Ormesby St Margaret.
The council’s planning officers had previously recommended the plans for approval, before councillors voted in favour at a development management committee meeting on December 12. This is a joint planning application between Flagship Homes, the development arm of social housing provider Flagship Group, and Esco Developments, with planning consultancy provided by Brown & Co.
Mark Williams, Flagship Homes’ Head of Pre-Construction Development, said: “We’re delighted to now be able to move ahead with this project, which marks another step in our mission to solve the housing crisis. The site will have a balance of affordable rent, shared ownership, and market-sale homes, which will benefit both local families and the broader community.
“We’re especially proud of the focus on sustainability and green spaces. We’re excited to begin construction next year and look forward to seeing this development come to life."
Of the homes, 24 will be for affordable rent, to be allocated to people on a local housing register by the council. Three will be for shared ownership – a hybrid between affordable rent and buying which gives people a chance to get onto the housing ladder without a large deposit.
The other 28 homes will be sold on the open market, with profits to be reinvested into social housing. The homes range from one-to-five bedroom and will include a mix of bungalows and two-storey homes.
There will be an extension of an existing footpath leading to North Road along the southern edge of the site. There are plans for a large public open space, including a LEAP (Locally Equipped Area for Play), in the south-west quarter, as well as another village green near the entrance to the site off Barton Way. The site will feature bat, bird and bee boxes as well as wildflower meadows, and the homes will be highly energy-efficient with solar panels and air-source heat pumps.
Ormesby has amenities including a school, a dentist, medical surgery, a pub, shops and restaurants.
